Manitoba Provincial Court Judge Brian Corrin/Queen's Bench Justice Robert Dewar?

Good Day Readers:

Back on February 25 of this year both CBC Manitoba (Manitoba judge charged with assault, threats) and The Winnipeg Free Press (Judge charged over family incident) carried stories an arrest warrant had been issued (February 20th) for Judge Brian Corrin who was subsequently taken into custody by police and released on a promise to appear in court. At the time, a hearing date was unavailable. Mr. Corrin was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of his case.

Judge Corrin was appointed to the Bench in 1988 and suspended for 30-days (1996) after a panel of 6-judges found him guilty of misconduct. One of the incidents that lead to the decision involved a court hearing he'd skipped so he could oversee repairs being made to his car.

We hadn't noticed any follow up in the media so decided to do a little checking. Talking with a provincial court official we learned a hearing was held on June 20th. The next one will be August 15th at 1:00 p.m. in courtroom 302. Since it will be open to the public we plan to attend as a Media Citizen Journalist. We were also advised the court file is open to the public so plan to attend The Law Courts soon to have a read.

The other case we're tracking is that of Queen's Bench Justice Robert Dewar.
Many will recall Manitoba Justice filed an appeal of his decision and controversial comments at time of sentencing in a rape conviction which kept the guilty party out of jail (Applel filed in controversial Manitoba rape decision - National Post, March 17, 2011). According to Chief Justice Glenn Joyal, Mr. Dewar agreed not to preside over any cases of a sexual nature. Justice Dewar's ruling so ourtraged many Manitobans the Canadian Judicial Council received several complaints and agreed to launch an investigation. As this is being written the CJC has yet to release any information about its findings. Perhaps it's too busy getting ready for the public inquiry into the Douglas-King-Chapman sexcapade.Shortly we hope to be able to update our readers on the current status of both these cases.

Sincerely,
Clare L. Pieuk
