Why do I Love Spicy Food So Much?

Oh Wow, just look at that spicy oil floating around with my noodle. For those of you who are wondering, that's curry noodles by the way (except that instead of using yellow noodles, I used Japanese noodles). So, as you have notice, there aren't many much greens in it. Thus, that's why its delicious -__-'''

Oh my, I can literally feel my saliva dancing around my mouth just thinking about this spiciness.

But I heard stories about the constant eating of spicy would decrease the sensitivity of your taste buds. Is that true?

A Tribute to Eric Heschong Artwork

Here is the artwork article of the week, and it's going to be a great one, as i am doing a grand tribute to a hlghly talented artist: Eric Heschong.

I love Eric's artwork since ten years ago when i've discovered some of his artwork for Walt Disney Imagineering, and you all know it as i am talking about the fantastic Tomorrowland '98 paintings like this one below.

Now, today i am not going to show you the artwork he did for WDI, but other great artwork he did for Landmark Entertainment. And those of you who like to discover concept-arts of never realised projects will be in heaven today as lot of the paintings below are in this case.

Let me tell you more about Eric. Eric Heschong learned to paint at the now defunct Hanna-Barbera cartoon studios. Later, he worked doing tight architectural illustration. And then for Landmark Entertainment, a company specialised in attraction, theme parks and resorts or casinos design. if you don't know Landmark, it's them for instance who designed the Terminator 3D attraction for Universal Studios and the amazing Spiderman ride at Islands of Adventure. At Landmark, back at the end of the 1990's Eric worked with Chuck Cancillier who was the designer. Chuck would do pencil layouts and then hand them off to Eric for paint. Every so often, he'd be asked to do the layouts.

"Working for Landmark was a fun time for me." says Eric. "I enjoyed the work and tried to please. I used my portfolio from Landmark to get work at Universal Studios and Walt Disney Imagineering. Most of the work I did at Walt Disney Imagineering was for Tony Baxter."

We will begin by paintings which are part of Eric's portfolio. No need to say they are gorgeous. Definitely double-click on each picture to see them in larger scale.

The first one, at the top of this article, is an "Emerald City" painting done for a Wizard of Oz park that was supposed to go in somewhere in Kansas. Landmark didn't mind that Eric's Emerald City looked nothing like the one in the movie. The header image is also an Eric's painting, for a Warner Bros concept.

This next painting with the purple rocket was for a Paramount Pictures park. A Willie Wonka attraction (on the right) and a Godfather's restaurant (on the left) were to be featured.

The two next paintings were done of course for a Star Trek attraction. I don't think these scenes/decors were realised but Landmark is the company who did do the Star Trek Experience in Las Vegas.

The next concept with this copper colored space station was actually built in South Korea.

This Bluto Bay decor was designed for a movie company who has or had the Popeye property - it might have been Universal.

Eric did also this concept-art for a James Bond "Licence to thrill" attraction. First, i thought he did it for a previous concept of the Walt Disney Studios "Motors, Action!" stunt show, as i knew WDI envisioned to do the stunt show on a James Bond theme. Then it was cancelled and i always thought it was for a rights/license problem, that the Bond license was too expensive, etc... In fact not, it's probably because Paramount Parks got the rights to do this "License to thrill" attraction. The attraction existed for real from 1998 in three or four diferent Paramount parks.

Landmark also designed Hotels and Casinos, like this 1999 ”Muwi Kingdom Hotel” concept for Inchon, South Korea.

This next bird's eye view was to be a casino/hotel called the City of Gold. It looks similar to the one above and may be it was done for the same concept.

The interior lobby would have been incredibly spectacular - i should say dazzling. That's the painting below, with the griffins.

The next concept-art with the movie theaters and trolley car was for a Navy Pier concept in Chicago.

This one too was done for the Chicago Navy Pier concept.

This 1998 acrylic painting shows a land called "Cartoon Ville" part of a proposal for a "Shanghai Movie Park" in China.

"Heavy Metal Island" is the title of this 1999 concept-art, the entrance to an island-Rolling Stones land in a proposed Rock theme park.

The two next paintings called "Metropolis Metro Entertainment Center" were done for a Shanghai Metro Entertainment Center.

The concept-art below show a "Nautical Sports Dome" for a Niagra Theme Park.

"U.S.O. with Bob Hope" is the name of the Cell Vinyl on illustration board concept below.

This next painting was for a "Rhythm and Blues Area" in a Grammy Exposition.

As i told you Landmark did lot of concepts for casinos. Here are some paintings that Eric did for these concepts. Let's begin with the Las Vegas Caesar's Palace and this concept-art for a 1995 "Caesar's Exterior Expansion".

The next one shows a new inside decor proposal for the Caesar's palace...

And this one, always at the Caesar's, is called "Casino of the Gods".

The next 1999 painting below is named "Secondary Gaming-Train Station", a proposed expansion of the Barona Casino in San Diego.

”Rooftop Casino” is the name of the scene below - obviously inspired by the rooftop of Paris Opera (where by the way i walked upon for real some years ago for a photo shooting!).

This next 1997 painting ”Monex New York Casino” was another kind of "rooftop" view for the Century City Monex.

"Starlight Restaurant Interior” is the title of the artwork below, designed for Phantom Phantasy Casino.

These two 1993 acrylic paintings were concepts for the Harrahs Hotel/CasinoLaughlin in Las Vegas. The first one is called "Harrahs Laughlin" and the next one "Plaza Scene"

Always for the Harrahs in Las Vegas, this last artwork is called "Mardi Gras".

I want to thanks Eric Heschong and Landmark Entertainment for providing me the pictures files and authorisation to post them in this article and i hope you now love Eric's artwork as much as i do!

Jew's Ear Juice !!!

From Ynet:

The Consulate General of Israel in Shanghai recently was surprised to discover on the shelves of a local supermarket chain a canned beverage called "The Jew's Ear Juice."

The Consulate General of Israel in Shanghai recently was surprised to discover on the shelves of a local supermarket chain a canned beverage called "The Jew's Ear Juice."

The drink is made of a black mushroom which does resemble a wrinkled ear.

Israel's Consul-General in Shanghai Jackie Eldan stressed that this was not a case of anti-Semitism, as Judaism is considered in China a synonym of success.

According to Eldan, the juice's manufacturer must have thought that linking it to the Jewish ear would be profitable.

And from the JC blog

Anyone fancy some Jew's Ear Juice?

You've heard of Yinglish - the mixture of Yiddish and English? Now, courtesy of the New York Times, comes Chinglish - the mixture of Chinese and English:

For English speakers with subpar Chinese skills, daily life in China offers a confounding array of choices. At banks, there are machines for “cash withdrawing” and “cash recycling.” The menus of local restaurants might present such delectables as “fried enema,” “monolithic tree mushroom stem squid” and a mysterious thirst-quencher known as “The Jew’s Ear Juice.”

A quick search on Google shows this stuff actually comes in a can - and is a black fungus juice. What it has to do with Jews still remains unclear, but one blogger ran a review:

It’s a nasty-looking thick semi-transparent cloudy brown liquid. It’s smell is weird, like a mix between the apple vinegar drink and turkey gravy. It’s a little thick and slimy, but the flavor is actually mild. The flavor isn’t anything at all like the cooked wood ear that I’m used to eating. It’s so strange that it tastes like bland, bad, old apple cider...

Well, what do you expect with a name like 'Jew's Ear Juice'?

A comment here explains:
The jew’s ear is actually a type of edible wild mushroom, and jew’s ear used to be a general term for all edible wild mushrooms, though this usage of the term has long fallen out of favour due to heavy pressure from the Jewish lobby. Ok, I made that last part up. But the rest is true.

And a pic of a Jew's Ear Bottle Opener from here.

Another comment: I assume they meant "The juicier juice"

One of those sites asks the most important question of all:  "Yes, but is it kosher?"

And finally, here's another strange beverage available in China...

My answer to Tangled french title

What you see above is Tangled french poster, "Raiponce" being - i suppose - the french translation or the french title for "Rapunzel". The only problem is that "Raiponce" means probably nothing for the french audience as the tale is not known here, in France. Even worst, if you talk to someone in France and ask him what Raiponce means he will think that you're talking about the word "RĂ©ponse" which means "answer" in French. And i'm ready to bet that in a few months from now everyone in France will joke on the title or will ask who the hell is responsible for choosing such a bad title.

I can understand that it's the original french title of the novel but, honestly, it's probably the worst movie title i've seen since a looong time... I must add that i don't have high expectations on this new Disney animated movie. I'm sure the animation and backdrop paintings will be brilliant but so far i don't "feel" it - but i'm ready to change my opinion if i see really exciting material from this "Raiponce". In the meantime, if you've not seen yet the first trailer, here it is below.

Add hat tip to Blue Sky Disney from where the poster picture is coming from!

Rabbi Yossi Braun's 'chassidim' create a blog

Further to our earlier report on the news that Sydney's Rabbi Yossi Braun has been nominated as a candidate for the 3rd position on Crown Heights Beth Din, we have learned that his supporters have established a blog promoting their candidate.

Some interesting posts from that site:

Meanwhile that blog reproduced AJN Watch's brachos to Rabbi Braun "AJN Watch, together with the rest of the Australian Jewish community, wish Rabbi Braun Hatzlacha Rabba" under their heading "Australia will miss him":

Now have a look at what the internet's search engine came up with as a "possibly related post":

The dangers of the internet...

7 Ways to Balance Your Life

Adopted from Temptalia, I think these tips are pretty useful to my life right now. Rock on it babeh!!
Schedule free time into your life. Don’t let yourself make excuses for why you aren’t hanging out with your honey, putting off that family dinner, or just not doing your favorite activity. It’s easy to put it off if you haven’t actually penciled in a time for it. Put it on your schedule so it becomes part of your day, part of your to-do list, in a sense. It may seem counterintuitive–planning your free time–but it’ll help you stick to your schedule.

Take 5 minutes before your start your day to pump YOU up. Before you start your day, tell yourself five good things about YOU. Compliment YOU. Then tell yourself five things you’re going to do today, whether it’s put makeup on, give your kids a kiss–pick five and then do them. Not only will you boost your self-confidence and start your day off on a positive note, but then you’ve created five mini-goals–and they’re as easy or difficult as you want them to be.

Get away from your desk/work. When possible, get out of your office, school, etc. for lunch or fifteen minute breaks. If the weather is nice, take a stroll around the building or away from it.

Re-read your favorite book. It’s important to spend time reading and enjoying things that aren’t required reading. If you’re not into books, try magazines, news articles, etc. instead. I always like to re-read my favorite books when I’m really busy with school reading, because I can just enjoy it–I know my favorite parts, I know the ending.

Take 5 minutes to de-stress before coming home. By coming home, I ultimately mean before you settle into your home, particularly if you live with others. Just take a few minutes to breathe and let go of any stress from the day. Your home is your sanctuary!

Go on vacation! Even if you can only afford to take a couple of days off from school/work, take them. And you don’t have to go to a ritzy resort if it’s not in your budget, either! You can have a stay-cation, too. Just spend the time relaxing, enjoying life, and not thinking about school/work, even if it’s just for a day or two.

Stop checking email in bed. This is something I’m terrible at not doing, but it can be so helpful. Sometimes you get action item emails before you go to bed, or you’ll see something that makes you jump out of bed as soon as you wake up… and before you know it, you’re not even doing what you’re supposed to be doing in bed–winding down or waking up.

Put pictures of things/people you love nearby your workspace. In your car, wallet, cubicle, office, computer, etc., keep a few photos of the people and things that are meaningful to you. Remember that you have a life outside of your school/work and those pictures will remind you every time you look at them.

Scared to Death

Idiotic headline of the week - Disneyland: "the crappiest place on earth"

Actually not only the headline, but the piece below the photograph is pretty idiotic as well.  Disneyland is the 'most xenophobic' and 'crappiest' place on earth? Really?
He can't think of any worse places? Adam Kamien has this time outdone even his usual foolish self.

Three Must Have Makeup

These are probably my staple makeup products that I must must must use before I leave for work. Or I'll look tremendously like an ogre, a witch, a gollum, a zombie, a troll, oh alright... an ugly old woman. So...

Of course, who can ever forget my love for blush. They totally make my cheeks flush as if I just had the most rosy cheeks anyone can have. I need these... **oogling**

Not to mention, lipgloss. They are practically my saviour as I use to have quite sickly looking pale lips. Thus the hint of colour and the glossy-ness could totally fool passer-by into thinking that I'm Marilyn Monroe with luscious smackers. **muah...**

Oh yeah, and the last item. Concealers. These are so so essential that I kinda forget how not to wear them before I leave the house. I know, my dark eye circles can't save my life, for that matters.

My mood right now: Happy, reluctant, confused, sad, depressed, anticipate, lonely, worried.

Just like a mud-ball of emotions thrown to me at once. Don't really know what I should be exactly feeling right now. But, you know, a human doesn't get too many 10 years to spend, so I guess I have to stop thinking of these darn annoying feelings and just get on with life. The earth will never stop turning just because I'm feeling down, well said indeed.

Alright, CINDY. Toughen up!!!
Editor's Note: Today, part two of the tribute article to Imagineer Don Carson, always with great original artwork! Part one is just below.

A Tribute to Don Carson Artwork - Part Two

Here is the part two of my Don Carson artwork tribute! Last time we saw Don's artwork for Mickey's Toontown and Splash Mountain and after the opening of both Splash and Toontown, Don continued his work as a Senior Show Designer on various projects, including Disney’s America, Blizzard Beach, Tokyo Disney Sea, Typhoon Lagoon enhancements, and many more. Here is some of his artwork for Disney's Blizzard Beach.

Above Don Carson artwork for Blizzard Beach tower rental building.

Blizzard Beach was created as an alternative venue to the very popular Typhoon Lagoon. Don worked with various artists, including Hani El Masi, to develop a style internally called “Alpine Floridian”. This was a mix of tropical Key West design elements and the Swiss architecture you might find in a sky village in the Alps. Don created concepts for two Blizzard Beach fast food location. One was called "Avalunch"...

Don did also renderings for two Blizzard Beach fast food location. One was called "Avalunch"...

And the other one "Snack Shack".

Over the years, some of Don's very favorite jobs at WDI was creating quick concept sketches for Walt Disney World's “enhancements program”. These were small budget projects that were initiated to constantly improve the experience of existing parks. Each year a team of Imagineers would visit each of the parks and sketch up their best improvement ideas. These were often based on the needs of the park's Operations Department, but allowed for a lot of self expression on the part of the Show Designers. In the below example, "Let's Go Slurpin'“ was a concept for a two story food facility that would have been located in Typhoon Lagoon.

Or this fun photo location with Laguna Gator...

And also these "Tips/Events boards".

In the mid 1990’s Don moved his family from Los Angeles to Eugene Oregon to continue his design work for not only companies like Disney, but branch out to include work on computer games, interior, and product design. In early 2000 Don began working with various start-up companies in California's Silicon Valley. Here he worked to bring his knowledge of creating physical themed environments to the virtual world, and to the computer screens of a world wide audience.

Below is some of his "post-Disney" artwork for There.com. “During those initial years,” says Don, "I had the opportunity to work as the Art Director leading a team of artists designing the virtual world of There.com. There is self described as "A place where you can engage your imagination by enjoying shared experiences with others online". For me the work has touched every aspect of my artistic training and allowed me to be a land developer, graphic illustrator, and theme park designer all in one project."

During the next four years, Don created hundreds of concept sketches used as the basis for virtual 3D environments. Since this was such a new industry, the designers had to learn as they went along.

The first rendering is of a Tiki village concept...

This one below show a Tiki bar concept...

And this one "Tiki Pete's Shirt" is a retail huts idea.

Below, a "Salty Dog Tavern" concept realised for There.com

Here is a book kiosk concept, always for There.com

...and the final 3D rendering of it.

Always using the 3D computer rendering technique, some other artwork for There.com

Don's work has come full circles as his designs for WDI put to use this computer design technique: "In recent years I have used the computer more and more to communicate concepts to my clients. After leaving Disney I desired to find a happy marriage between my conceptual, theme park, and theater design work via 3D computer design. As computers have become more powerful the potential to deliver concepts that are very close to the finished product is growing. Computers have also allowed me to work from my Oregon studio while remaining connected virtually to clients all over the world."

It's with this technique that Don did these early WDI "computer aided" concepts for Toy Story Mania! First, here is a "traditional" 2D black and white sketch...

...and the final "computer designed" 3D rendering.

Always in 3D, a Toy Story Mania show set facade.

You may have notice that on these two 3D renderings the vehicles don't look as they are in the final version, as these were early concept. But if you look again at the Monsters Inc Ride and Go Seek photo report posted laast tuesday, you'll see that the MOnsters Inc vehicles looks exctly like Don's early TSM vehicle concept above! one more proof that at WDI "a good idea never die"!

Below, another 3D Toy Story Mania rendering for a cannon concept.

"The past few years have been an adventure as I work to bridge the gap between concept and final product. Conceiving in 3D has allowed me to marry my design sense with tools that I can use to visualize an idea as close as possible to its eventual implementation." says Don. One thing is sure, these 3D renderings look absolutely great, i love them!

Don continues to work in the theme park industry for Disney, Universal, and other design firms, and always strives to bring a “Disney” sensibility to all of his work.

These last images below are some of Don's most recent work. By combining his experience as a theme park, video game, and now virtual world designer, Don is always working to push where environmental storytelling can take an audience. With luck you will see some of that Disney influence in these images as well.
